What are we going to do about it?

When life gets stressful I aim to do MORE of the good stuff. I ultimately want to make my mind and body stronger to contend with any stress that comes my way.

During times of stress;

ÂI get adjusted MORE.

I pray MORE.

I journal MORE.

I exercise MORE.

I sleep MORE.

I read MORE.

I chose to watch shows that make me laugh and I chose to eat better.

Listen to your body. What is it saying and what do you need right now? If what you are watching, listening to or reading is causing you to lose sleep it is crucial you reevaluate what you are doing. Making yourself sick serves no one. As a Chiropractor my purpose is service to humanity. How can I serve others if Iâm not taking care of myself?

Many times in my adulthood, Iâve had to reevaluate my life which helped me make better choices. I will be writing a series of articles to help you reevaluate where you are right now and where you want to go. Remember, health is a work in progress but as long as we choose to take steps towards better health, we will reap the benefits.Â
Please Be Aware. . . http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2020/06/30/please-be-aware--/ Tue, 30 Jun 2020 19:21:47 -0400
Practice members have asked us if we are returning to pre-covid scheduling policies. The answer is "No."

We will continue scheduling by appointment only through the end of 2020.

As a reminder, because we take care of a lot of people in our community, it is crucial that you cancel Massage and Chiropractic appointments immediately if you suffer from any of these following symptoms:

+Fever of over 100 degrees

+Difficulty Breathing, fatigue

+Cough

+Loss of taste and smell

or other Flu-like symptoms

(Please see the CDC website to learn more about CV-19 symptoms.)

If a person you have had contact with has these symptoms or tests positive, it is important you cancel your appointments immediately. You will not be charged the cancellation fee for your massage. You are welcome to schedule again once you receive a negative CV-19 test or symptoms are gone for 14 days.

Thank you for your understanding!

Everyone at BFC
Health Tip #3 http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2020/06/09/health-tip-3/ Tue, 09 Jun 2020 11:47:29 -0400
Health Tip #3

Known as the immune systemâs protective shield, Thieves is one of the best essential oils to use for self-care. It is a blend of cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, lemon, and rosemary.Â

I personally use Thieves in one form or another every day, whether it is myÂThieves toothpasteÂandÂflossÂor thieves lozenges. You can use Thieves spray on pillow cases or as an air freshener. I useÂThieves Household CleanerÂto clean toilets and floors and we use Thieves essential oil in the diffusers at the front desk and in the massage room. You can also consume Thieves in capsule form or put a few drops in a glass of water or stainless steelÂwater bottle. Thieves is so versatile, easy to use and it smells amazing.ÂÂ

Not everyone realizes Thieves is consumable. When I'm feeling run down and I need a lift, I make my own capsule of Thieves. If you want a really powerful and potent combination, purchase capsules and fill with these essential oils:

Thieves

FrankincenseÂ

Oregano

Lemon (There is already Lemon oil in Thieves, but I will add a few drops for the extra benefits of citrus.)

If you are interested in Thieves products and/or Young Living, let me know. I've been a distributor for Young Living since 2008.

Yours in Health,Â

Dr. Helena Beacom, DC
The Power of Thieves http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2020/06/09/the-power-of-thieves/ Tue, 09 Jun 2020 11:13:10 -0400

Health Tip #2 http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2020/06/09/health-tip-2/ Tue, 09 Jun 2020 10:52:16 -0400
Health Tip #2

It is common in conversations hear things like, âItâs a virus, there is nothing you can do.â What we have to start realizing is that every day we can have healthy habits that will keep our body healthy and also help us fight viruses and bacteria. Our body is well equipped to do so. Your immune system was made to take care of foreign particles and it does an amazing job every minute of every day. Your immune system takes care of your body whether you have symptoms or not. You benefit from a boost to your immune system with each adjustment, according to independent researcher Ron Pero which is a fabulous beneficial side effect to your care here. People often ask me, âWhat can I do at home?âÂ

Here is Health Tip #2:

Consuming Coconut oil daily.Â

In the 1980s, coconut oil was considered bad because it is fat. That was the start of the low fat, high carbohydrate, trans-fat, boxed food generation. However the make-up of coconut oil is similar to some of the fats that make up your brain tissue. Now there are studies showing how the consumption of coconut oil helps to reverse some components of Alzheimerâs disease.

(Source:Âhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28421789)

According to this study, at least two fatty acids in coconut oil, and their monoglycerides, have antiviral properties. These components of coconut oil will cause breakdown of the virus membrane, inhibit virus maturation and prevent binding of the virus proteins to the host cell membrane. In another small study, coconut oil consumption also showed an increase in immune system cells in HIV patients.

(Source:Âhttps://www.icp.org.ph/2020/01/the-potential-of-coconut-oil-and-its-derivatives-as-effective-and-safe-antiviral-agents-against-the-novel-coronavirus-ncov-2019/)

What is the best way to add Coconut oil to your diet? Buy organic, virgin coconut oil. You can put coconut oil on toast or sauté food with it. Sometimes I take a spoonful of coconut oil and dip it into raw honey and eat it. It is delicious! I consume coconut oil in my coffee each morning.Â

Dr. Hâs Power Coffee

Brewed organic coffee of choice

Spoonful of coconut oil

Spoonful of honey (If you don't want sugar in your diet, omit the honey.)

Sprinkle of cinnamon

Milk of choice

Â

Let coconut oil melt and blend all ingredients together, otherwise melted coconut oil will pool on the top of your coffee. Enjoy!
Health Tip #1 http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2020/05/05/health-tip-1/ Tue, 05 May 2020 17:46:52 -0400

Â

Health Tip #1, by Dr Helena

With everything that has been going on the last two months, it is imperativeÂthat we talk about HEALTH.ÂAccording to Webster's Dictionary, "Health is a state of OPTIMAL physical, social and emotional well-being and not merely the absenceÂof disease or symptoms."ÂUnderstanding how to be healthy is crucial for everyone, including those with pre-existing conditions and the immuno-compromised.ÂNo matter what is going on, we need our body to be HEALTHY.ÂPeople with pre-existing conditions need more HEALTH.ÂThe immuno-compromised need more HEALTH.ÂChildren and adults alike need more HEALTH.

We ALL have the potential to be healthy.ÂThere are always viruses floating around and there always will be.ÂHow do we make our body strong to combat stress to our body every day?ÂFor our family, ChiropracticÂis the core of how we care for our bodies and adjust to keep them healthy.ÂBut what are things we can all do at home?ÂI will be sharing over the next few emails different healthy habits we can utilize at home outside our adjustments.

Here is the first:

Saline is a great way to clean the sinuses.ÂI use a Neti Pot and saline on a regular basis as a preventative.ÂYou can buy a saline spray for kids as well.ÂThere are great articles and studies that show how saline solution can reduce the use of over the counter medications, the duration of the illness, transmission to others and viral shedding.

Here are research studies I wanted to share that show saline'sÂaffects on viruses:

https://thefederalist.com/2020/03/27/how-grandmothers-gargling-remedy-could-help-abate-the-wuhan-virus/

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/329714613_A_pilot_open_labelled_randomised_controlled_trial_of_hypertonic_saline_nasal_irrigation_and_gargling_for_the_common_cold

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18209140Â(Children and Saline)

Let's Talk Food http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2020/01/30/lets-talk-food/ Thu, 30 Jan 2020 15:44:37 -0500
I love to eat. I love to try new foods. People often assume I'm a vegetarian and I never eat meat or dessert. My husband is always amused by this!ÂOn Saturday we found a Persian restaurant in Grand Rapids. I tried everything on the plate and I had to have the Baklava. I enjoyed all of it with no regrets.Â

Just for the record, my favorite thing to order at Old Channel Inn is the fried walleye and at Bone Ends is the MorningstarÂChicken BBQ salad.ÂÂ

I'm not afraid of food per se and I'm definitely not afraid of fat. I eat coconut oil and a raw egg daily. I consume fat from beef, chicken, pork and dairy. I eat full fat GreekÂplain yogurt and if I drink milk I opt for full fat milk.ÂÂ

WHY?

The brain and the nervous system are made of fat. Cholesterol is one type of fat in your brain. The fat in coconut oil is similar toÂfat in your brain. There are studies using coconut oil to help with brain regeneration and it's showing promising results. It has also been shown, people on long term cholesterol medications are prone to dementia. The cholesterol medsÂdo a great job of destroying the necessary cholesterol in the brain. Hormones in the body also need fat to work properly. By avoiding fat, you can set your body up for hormonal issues.

I am afraid of trans fat;ÂakaÂCrisco. I avoid hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated fats. These fats scrape your blood vessel walls and are the cause of clogging of the arteries, not saturated fats. How could a food item from a box ever be healthier then farm raised produce or meats? It can't.

I am afraid of processed carbs. I eat them sparingly. I found when I eat chips at night before bed, I wake up feeling terrible. It just isn't worth it to me.

Here are rules I follow:

I don't eat fast food.

I don't eat out often.

I don't drink soda. I live on lemon water.

I rarely eat at night before bed.

We buy chicken, pork and beef directly from farmers that feed their animals right.

I avoid GMOsÂand eat as organic as possible.Â

I limit sugar and processed carbohydrates (unless I'm in New York. Then I enjoy every bite of pizza, bagels and Italian food.)

I don't count calories. I monitor but don't stress about my weight. I stress more when I don't fit in my clothes right.ÂÂ

I exercise three times a week. Sometimes I exercise more but I don't stress about that either. I recognizeÂthe more weight lifting and biking I do, the more muscle gain I will have. Muscle weighs more then fat. As a result, I will fit better in my clothes but possibly weight more.

I try hard to make my plate colorful. Since my son prefers raw vegetables, it pushes me to eat more too.

I consume home made pickles, drink KombuchaÂand I love sauerkraut. We are canning more and more of our own home grown produce.

I like food too much to stress about it. If I'm on vacation I allow myself to enjoy. I listen to my body and try to balanceÂeating what my body is asking for with trying different things.Â

If I'm not happy with what I ate today, I remember tomorrow is new day.ÂÂ

It is time to have a better relationship with food but to do that we have to start buying and consuming better food. To purchase junk food and put it in your pantry and then try to avoid eating it is just too hard! Stop putting it in your grocery cart and you will be one step closer to success.Â

I choose food based on how I feel when I consume it. If I feel like garbage I really limit that food item. I let myself enjoy "bad" foods in moderation. I make them the minority of my diet and focus on what foods I really feel good eating. The more you do this, the more you crave the good stuff!

The details of nutrition can be quite overwhelming but making one change at a time isn't that hard if you want it bad enough. We are never too old to make changes to our diet and health.ÂÂ

What you put in your body can also determine how fast you respond to care here at BFC. You need proper nutritional building blocks to heal. Eating real food will help your body in more ways then you can imagine!

Â
2019 Holiday Hours http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2019/12/16/2019-holiday-hours/ Mon, 16 Dec 2019 10:57:34 -0500

Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2019/09/20/get-busy-living-or-get-busy-dying/ Fri, 20 Sep 2019 14:47:31 -0400
People are driven to our office for different reasons. However, one thing remains the same: they are asking for help and they have hope their life is about to change. ÂAnd change it will if they dedicate themselves to a healthy lifestyle. At the end of the initial stage of care, we perform another examination so we can compare how far you have come in a relatively short period of time. At this point, everyone has choices. Some people are only interested in being pain free and stop care until they hurt again. Some people are interested in getting their body to heal at a deeper level and want to continue care.Â

Short term care = Short term results.

Long term care = Long term results.

Most of the time, pain is just a symptom telling you that your body doesnât like what you are doing and that it is time you change something. Some people judge their health on pain. They believe that if they donât have pain, they are fine. In truth, whether you feel good or not, if you arenât working on your health potential, then you are quite possibly degenerating, or progressing backwards.

I was looking at pictures the other day. On one vacation, I noticed my arms had muscles lines. I can go back in my workout journal and see that I was exercising consistently at that time. In a later picture, I noticed I didnât have visible muscle lines at all. I had stopped exercising and it didnât take long to lose the gains I had made, visible in my picture history. I was no longer doing the work it takes to keep seeing the benefits of exercise. And yet with Chiropractic we can have the silly thought that you will maintain benefits from your short 12 weeks of initial care without continued work. . .

The body is impacted by chemical, physical, and emotional stress EVERY day. It would be silly of me to think that after doing an eight week workout program, I would maintain those gains for the rest of my life by doing nothing. The body just doesnât work that way. Andy from the movie Shawshank Redemption said it perfectly: âI guess it comes down to a simple choice, really. Get busy living or get busy dying.â This quote is both emotional and poignant. You are either working towards health or working towards death. Only you can determine what direction you want to take. The choice is always up to you.
Love is the Answer http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2019/09/11/love-is-the-answer/ Wed, 11 Sep 2019 14:30:00 -0400
Â

Art by LilyJo

In July, 2001 I had traveled to Kathmandu, Nepal for my Clinic Abroad trip with Palmer College of Chiropractic. On the morning of 9/11/01, I woke in my apartment in Davenport, Iowa to Bob Segerâs song, âKathmandu.â Some of the lyrics are: âI ainât got nothing against the east coast. You want some people where they got the most. And New York Cityâs like a friendly ghost you seem to pass right through.â

The song was interrupted by the news of the first tower being hit. I turned on the news and picked up the phone to check on my father. I knew he was working in NYC but I didnât know what shift. I was happy to hear he was home by 6am and was sleeping. ÂWhen I was a kid, Dad and I would take trips into the city. We enjoyed going to the top of the Empire State Building in midtown, and then going downtown to goÂto the top of the Twin Towers. The view from up there was absolutely incredible.

I am fortunate to have those memories.Â

In December, 2001, my sister and I went into Manhattan while home for Christmas. It happened to be the day they opened the overlook at Ground Zero. ÂThe city has a silence to it that was unnatural. It wasnât a sleepy Sunday morning. Rather it was a gut-wrenching time of mourning. People were still missing and unaccounted for. We slowly walked past burning candles and pictures of loved ones. I donât know what I was expecting really or why I was even on that line. Looking at the destruction, the size of the hole was too much to handle. The broken windows of the surrounding buildings and American Flag hanging nearby caused me to start shaking and sobbing. There was a camera crew pulling people aside asking them their thoughts. ÂI put my hood over my head, turned and walked away.

My sister and I didnât talk for a long time. I just cried while I walked. I was trying to hard to stifle sobs but strange sounds kept coming out of me as we walked. It is 2019 and I still have the same response when I try to watch the 9/11 videos.

People are harmed around the world every day. People are killing each other here in the states. I think everyone should go to the 9/11 Memorial in NYC as well as the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC, Detroit or Germany. ÂIt is important to never forget. People continue to hate each other for political, cultural, religious and philosophical differences. There is a great big hole in this country and sometimes it is just too much to handle.Â

But I believe in love. ÂI believe in caring for others. I believe in service and community. ÂI want to be a part of the solution and I know change starts with each of us. We aim to create a community in our office where laughter abounds and hugs are plentiful. Together, healthier people have the power to make a better world. ÂâImagine all the people living life in peace. You may say that I'm a dreamer but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us and the world will be as one.â Imagine, John Lennon
Are you willing to do what's necessary for true change? http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2019/09/11/are-you-willing-to-do-whats-necessary-for-true-change/ Wed, 11 Sep 2019 12:39:13 -0400
According to Autumn Calabrese, trainer from Beachbody.com, 70% of people that start an exercise routine, never complete it! I have many BEACHBODY exercise videos in my collection. I have been guilty of not completing a workout program. Iâve also been guilty of quitting exercise after Iâve dedicated myself to an 8 week program. I love exercising but it can be last on the list of priorities when there are a bunch of other things I need to do.

Recently I have decided to make a lifestyle change. My goal isnât to just make changes for the next 8 weeks but rather for a lifetime. I was motivated to purchase Hammer and Chisel from BEACHBODY because I was needing to do something different. My Chiropractic adjustments wouldnât hold. It was getting harder for my mid back to get adjusted and I was living with chronic pain. Sadly, most of us need pain to be motivated to make necessary changes to our lives.

In Autumnâs BEACHBODY videos, she says many motivational things to keep you going when it gets really hard to continue. One things Autumn says is, âIf it doesnât challenge you, it doesnât change you.â Another one of my favorites is, âIf you want something youâve never had, youâll have to do something youâve never done.â

We truly need to start looking at healthy habits as a journey, not a destination. Being out of chronic pain was my motivation, but now that I am 5 weeks into Hammer and Chisel, should I quit since my mid back pain is gone and Iâm holding my adjustments better? Being out of pain is great, but what about increasing endurance and strength, having more energy and sleeping better and being a better Mom as a result of the work Iâm doing? There is so much more to life than being pain free. That just scratches the service of a life worth living. Concerning yourself with pain only puts you on a rollercoaster you will never get off: Do something different to get you out of pain. Stop what got you there. Have a flare-up that motivates you to start taking care of yourself again, but just enough to get you out of pain. Quit when youâre feeling better. . . ÂAnd on and on it goes. As we age, the flare-ups last longer and the results we want take longer. We start to think what we are doing is no longer working so we jump to some other modality seeking answers. But the truth is many people donât want to keep doing the work that got them the initial results and they often quit too soon before long term change can happen. ÂMany of us never give ourselves the chance to experience true change to the body.Â

According to Lallyâs study; âOn average, it takes more than 2 months before a new behavior becomes automatic â 66 days to be exact. And how long it takes a new habit to form can vary widely depending on the behavior, the person, and the circumstances. In Lally's study, it took anywhere from 18 days to 254 days for people to form a new habit.â (https://jamesclear.com/new-habit)

Letâs put this in perspective. Muscles regenerate in 4 months. Bones regenerate in 9 months and the brain and nervous system regenerates every 14 months. Our care plan is based on how long it takes a (weight baring) sprained joint to heal: 12-16 weeks. The repetition of 3 times a week is based on science that shows how former muscle patterns pull the bones back out of alignment during the first 12-16 weeks. ÂTo make longer change to the muscles, you need to be exercising and getting adjusted regularly for 4 months. To make changes to the structure the muscles pull on, you need to be exercising and getting adjusted regularly for 9 months. Do you want longer lasting change to the neurological system? You need to be getting adjusted regularly for over 14 months.Â

If I, Dr. Helena, after 28 year of Chiropractic care, decide to stop getting adjusted and stop exercising, my results will start to reverse in as little as 7-14 days.

It is truly impossible to work out once and wake up with 6-pack abs. It is also impossible to get adjusted once and reverse a lifetime of trauma. If you want long lasting change, then you need to do the work for a lifetime. From my personal experience, you will never get the results you want if you keep quitting on yourself. Your health is your responsibility. In truth, doing the work to strive towards health is an amazing journey. One Iâve been on for many years. One Iâm still seeking to improve! Iâm constantly striving to be a better me; for my practice members, my kids, for my husband and also for me. We all have an opportunity to take care of ourselves every day. Make your days the best they can be. Choose wisely. Choose health!
Wake Up! http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2019/07/10/wake-up/ Wed, 10 Jul 2019 12:19:30 -0400
We are very excited to announce that Dr. Helena will have a chapter in the next Wake Up book! This book should be published this fall. In the meantime, check out other Wake Up books on Amazon.com.ÂÂ

"It is truly an honor to be a part of this next Wake Up book. Studying Cranial adjusting for the last seven years, it seemed to fit perfectly in a book about the prosperous and happy brain. So many people still don't know that the skull bones can be adjusted and that they DON'T fuse after the soft spots are gone. Adjusting the cranial bones allows for better oxygen and food flow to the brain cells. Combing Cranial adjusting with Spinal adjusting allows for proper nerve, blood and fluid flow between brain and body. The benefits to care are endless and I am blessed to share both with our community."

40 days http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2019/03/13/40-days/ Wed, 13 Mar 2019 13:34:49 -0400
Fr. Peter Omogo, asked the question at mass today, "What would you do differently if you knew you had only 40 days left to live?"

During Lent, as a kid I would give up chocolate, TwinkiesÂ(yes, I ate Twinkies) or eating between meals. Sunday was a day of rest, which meant I could eat chocolate again. As an adult, I see Lent as a time of reflection and an opportunity to make a positive change to my life. You do not have to be Catholic to dedicate yourself to something for the next 40 days. I have seen Facebook posts suggesting we eliminate 1 unused item from our house each day for 40 days. We could also chooseÂto do a 30 dayÂdetoxÂwhere we work on cleaning out our body each day.

However, this year, I decided to add to my life. There are 5 pillars of health: Relational, Financial, Physical, Mental and Spiritual. We can utilize this time to reflect on the different areas of our lives and see what needs some dedication. Where have we been lacking lately? For the next 40 days consider ways of enhancing these five areas of your life:

(Relational) Write a "Thank you" note each day to a different person in your life.

(Financial) Put aside every $5 you get back in change into a jar and at the end of the monthÂdonate it to your favorite cause.

(Physical) Set a goal to be active with your kids daily.

(Mental) Set up various volunteering activities throughout the month.

(Spiritual) Plan on starting and ending your day with prayer and gratitude.

Lent gives us the opportunity to care a little more, love a littleÂmore and forgive a little more. If we are willing to commit to ourselves, at the end of 40 days, these changes will just become a part of our daily routine.Â

In our office we strive to create a community of love, support and healing. Change begins with all of us and each of us are responsible for making our corner of the world just a little bit brighter. Let's commit together today so if our life would end in 40 days, we can honestly say we did our best.

Â

ÂÂ
LOVE HAS NO COLOR http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2019/03/13/love-has-no-color/ Wed, 13 Mar 2019 12:29:21 -0400
Â

Â

I was asked recently; âHow is the reservation project going?â My response was; âAwesome. Just plain awesome.â BFC has been a part of Love Has No Color since the beginning. We do two fundraisers a year for LHNC and our LHNCÂevent just came to an end. Driving to Williston, ND after this yearâs Christmas on the Reservation, I just started sharing what it was like the first time I went to Fort Peck. I remember some kids kept their arms folded and wouldnât smile when receiving their Christmas gift. They acted like they were obligated to be there. I remember an elementary school student yelling out, âI donât want this!â after receiving a tall tower of match box cars. I remember at early Boot Camps, Dr. Kevin (LHNCÂfounder) would literally lay in the street with a sign to get cars to stop. Parentâs would throw their kids out of their cars and keep driving.Â

Now it is a completely different experience. When I talk with locals and they realize Iâm one of the Chiropractors, I get told great stories about the gifts their child or grandchild has received. We now have people on the reservation going out of their way to help in any way they can.ÂÂIn the past people just expected us to be like the other groups and never return. But we didnât give up and we did return twice aÂyear for over a decade and as a result one of the most emotional things I experienced was having the older kids line the halls to high five us and give us hugs. I brought my daughter Lily for the first time to COTR and she didnât really know how to take the big kids clapping for us. Lily just looked overwhelmed by what she was watching. We walked past a lunch room and kids jumped up and put their hands against the glass to line up with ours. The changes are profound to say the least.

I have to admit, in the early years I didnât really understand LHNC and what Dr. Kevin was wanting to accomplish at Fort Peck. I only started to understand when I visited for the first time. On that first visit, I was fortunate enough to help adjust the children at Boot Camp, dance at a Pow-Wow and do a traditional Native Sweat Lodge. My head was spinning when I left that year and I was hooked. The 2018 COTR was a great reminder as to why itâs so important to continue moving forward and what can truly change if we set our head, heart and hands to it. ÂAll of the dedication and support continues to make a difference and BFCÂis proud to be a part of it.
Auction Items http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2019/02/23/auction-items/ Sat, 23 Feb 2019 14:33:38 -0500

Love Has No Color Auction http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2019/02/23/love-has-no-color-auction/ Sat, 23 Feb 2019 14:32:13 -0500
Â

A Love Has No Color auction is starting today, February 20th at 12 PM (EST) and ends March 6th at 12 PM. (and what comes out!)

And last but not least; getting your butt moving for exercise and to the Chiropractor.

I had the choice once to keep living the way I was living or be open to change. I jumped at the opportunity.

I went from living with chronic ear infections, rounds of antibiotics, bronchitis, tonsillitis, chronic stiff necks, and torticollis to a life that is drastically different. I havenât taken an antibiotic in easily over a decade. Iâm constantly working on the health of my body and immune system and making better choices.

Both choices you have to work at, so why not make the better of the two?

That my friend is up to you!
Snow Day! http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2019/01/27/snow-day/ Sun, 27 Jan 2019 23:28:02 -0500

Another snow day is upon us! I have to admit I'm like a little kid when the fluffy white stuff falls from the sky. Growing up on Long Island, we so rarely had a snow day, I still get excited by the thought of it. With a snow day already announced on a Sunday evening, I get to sit up and wait for the storm to start. I'm very fortunate that I get to be home with the kids tomorrow and look out the windowÂwith them first thing like it's Christmas morning. We have no plans to go anywhere and no plans to do anything. I got work done today so I can just let the day plan itself; a little snow time, a little hot chocolate time, a little play time and quite possibly a little cuddle-up-on-the-couch time.ÂÂ

But in truth, I'm not always good with "doing nothing." I'm a bit of a workaholic and there's always something to get accomplished. These sort of magical days are just what I need to "just be." SometimesÂwe need to give ourselves permission to enjoy a free day. We have these so rarely, why not just give in and have a play day with the kids? When was the last time you had nothing planned and just enjoyed a day off? Let's take this opportunity to add more fun and laughter into our lives and we will be healthier for it!ÂÂ
LOVE HAS NO COLOR http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2019/01/23/love-has-no-color/ Wed, 23 Jan 2019 10:40:51 -0500

Â

At BFC, we do four fundraisers a year. We start and end the year with fundraisers for the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. In December, four of us from BFC went to the res to give out the giftsÂraised during the Christmas on the Reservation fundraiser in October and November. Each time I go, I am excited to see the positive changes that are taking place. This year, the kids came out in the hall to meet and greet us at one of the schools we visited. It was overwhelming and beautiful and emotional. I am honored to be a part of Love Has No Color and we constantly look for different ways BFCÂcan be involved. In past years we have hosted an annual bowling event and had quilt raffles for our first fundraiser of the year. This year we are auctioning off an awesomeÂgift that comes with the feeling of summer! Each raffle ticket is $10. People that come to our health talks, and refer in new patients will receive a free raffle ticket! For New Patients, a donation of $50 to Love Has No Color will cover the cost of their first visit here at BFC. (This first visit donation does NOT apply to Medicare and Medicaid.) This is a great opportunity to help support the children on the Fort Peck Reservation as well as help you and your family get healthier this year.Â

When LHNC began 13 years ago, the donations went towards building out a movie theater and the Chiropractic Clinic. The entire building was condemned at that time. Seven years of work and hundreds of volunteers later, both were completed. Since then, the kids have a social meeting pace that provides protection from dangerous influences like gangs, drugs and crime. Food is often provided for the children at the movie theater. This year 100% of donations from this event will go towards the preservation and maintenance of the theater. Please help us continue to provide a safe haven for the kids on the reservation. We truly need your help!

Â

Â

Â
AWARENESS http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2019/01/23/awareness/ Wed, 23 Jan 2019 10:08:33 -0500
For the last few months, I have been going through every closet and drawer in our house. I am not manic about it by any means. I go where inspiration strikes me, like âWhat is in the guest room dresser drawers?â I open them up one by one and either add stuff to the Goodwill pile or put it where it might actually belong or become aware that we have this particular item so we donât buy another one. In most drawers there is excess and possibly things another person could use. As humans we accumulate stuff. When the stuff becomes clutter, it frustrates me and I feel overwhelmed by it. I do enjoy finding new homes for things and it feels good to get fresh air into a previously cluttered drawer or closet.Â

Awareness of our surroundings is important. But what about awareness of our bodies? Most often our body gets ignored, because we are afraid to step on that scale and then be responsible for what we see there. I find the human ego is very interesting. I people watch all the time. The ego says, âIf I actually knew what my current weight was, and didnât like it, I would have to become responsible to my health to change it.â That is just too painful, so we will just avoid it altogether.Â

It is hard to get back to exercising, because if you stopped and you decide to start again, you most likely wonât have the same strength or endurance you had before. That loss can make one feel like a failure, so we just avoid exercising altogether.

We truly need to start just becoming aware for the sake of awareness and not place any emotions to it. It is just a start point. Period. If we want to change our weight, our endurance, our strength or our environment, we need to start somewhere. ÂI challenge you to start with the junk drawer in your house. Empty it. Throw out garbage, make a goodwill bag and put back what you need so you can find it when you need it. I challenge you to get on that scale. Write down the weight and take your measurements. Look in the mirror and tell yourself you are beautiful and commit to changing those numbers if you feel they need changing. Donât be manic about it. Donât harbor negative feelings towards yourself. Just get up and start moving because itâs good for you.

On January 1st, I pulled my Fitbit out of my drawer, charged it and put it on. I wasnât sure I wanted to record what I ate each day and how much water I drank. But in truth it brought forth awareness of what I was doing. Since I have to check in with the computer each day, it also helped to create responsibility. What am I putting in my mouth each day? Does that allow me to thrive? Or is it making me sick? Is it helping me reach my goals? Or is it counterproductive? ÂWhat are your goals? You canât change if you donât know where youâre going. Commit to change this year. Commit to being a better you. It helps me to have goals on my Fitbit for how many steps I took today; how many staircases did I climb, and how many times did I exercise this week? How are my stats this week compared to last? We all have a little competitive side. Why not compete to make yourself better?

The treatment plans we lay out for you at the office work. Why not commit yourself to that plan to get the most out of your care in our office? Commit to coming to our health talk so you are fully engaged in your healing. There is such a difference in the outcome of those that commit to themselves versus those that donât. We, the Chiropractors at BFC, will NEVER quit on you. We always see opportunity and potential regardless of age or past history. Sadly some people quit on themselves and never give themselves a chance for a better life. But those that commit, get a life back they often didnât think was possible! And there is nothing better than that.Â
Miles's Story http://www.beacomchiro.com/blog/healthy-thoughts-by-dr-helena/2018/05/23/miless-story/ Wed, 23 May 2018 12:31:09 -0400

Miles hasÂinspired many Chiropractors to study CATS. You can read Miles's story in the Important Patient Records Folder you receive on your first visit here at BFC. His story was also published in a book named; "The Making of a Miracle" compiled by Dr. Kevin Pallis, DC. If you are interested in learning more, ask for a copy of Miles'sÂstory in book or booklet form.
